Īn 1830 portrait of Mary Marshall, who died in 1877 at the age of 93, is hanging in the lobby after it was acquired from the estate of Jim Williams, the central figure in John Berendt's non-fiction novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The veranda and gas lights were reproduced in the likeness of the originals. Original parts of the building include the Philadelphia pressed brick on the exterior, the Savannah grey brick throughout, its staircases, wooden floors, fireplaces and the doors to each guest room. The building was restored the following year and reopened to the public as Savannah's oldest hotel. The upper three floors were abandoned, but the ground floor was used by shopkeepers up until 1998. The Marshall House closed in 1957 due to an economic downturn. The property was named the Geiger Hotel for a period. The room itself was extremely clean and had all the necessary amenities. Three ghosts are believed to inhabit the famously haunted inn. The neighborhood feels quite safe and the room has a double lock, so we weren't concerned about security. Recommended by Conde Nast Johansens and known for. It has a private entrance on the ground floor, which was massively convenient. After a short tour of the beautiful facilities, we were shown to our room. ![]() We didn't have to pay for parking as we were there on a weekend, which was a pleasant surprise. Masks were enforced and the staff were taking precautions to keep things feeling safe. I had SUCH a great experience at Eliza Thompson House that I was compelled to write my first ever review! Check-in was a breeze as we had completed the online form ahead of time.
